Secondary Glazing is when a second pane of glass is added to an existing window frame, it adds more sound proofing and reduces heat loss without having to replace your existing frames.

This method is used as an alternative to having double glazed units fitted at great expense, often used in older properties where structural changes are not advisable. There are a number of different solutions available, some are more suitable for different situations where some are preferred due to aesthetic reasons.

Options include vertical and horizontal sliding panels, hinged units and balanced sliders each offer a different look and some more suitable than others depending on the situation.

Horizontal sliders are the most common type of secondary glazing in the UK, it is versatile and can be used in high or low level residential and commercial properties and historic buildings.

Hinged units are great if you are looking for a less obtrusive system, there are no mullions or transoms in the pane to block the view but the improvements in noise reduction and thermal insulation remain the same.

Lift out options are available for windows where little access is required such as light giving windows but they are more difficult to open than other options.

The balanced vertical slider is the most complicated form of secondary glazing system. It usually installed at older properties where aesthetic is more important. It is particularly suited to the refurbishment and upgrade of the nation’s architectural heritage. This is the most common form of secondary glazing used in sash windows.
